Clip on Lamps

Hi all,

After a false start (I bought a cheap lamp only to realise why it was cheap !), I’ve found a supplier of clip-on music lamps that are ideally suited to our needs  (see pic).  I ordered one for myself, and am really pleased with it.  It illuminates a double-A4 folder very nicely, and operates from batteries, or a power supply that’s included.

I’m ordering one for Ben, and am happy to order multiples if anyone else wants one.

Let me know on Monday if you want me to place an order for you – they are £22 inc. delivery, and I’ll need your cash up front.  Delivery should take less than a week, so we stand a chance of these arriving before the concert on Nov 2nd.

Cheers Jem

Rehearsals and Repertoire Update

Hi all,

Rehearsal at Patrick Church – Mon 29th October

Firstly, a quick reminder that our next rehearsal is at the Holy Trinity Church in Patrick.

See below for map and picture of the church.   Directions from St. John’s are ….

Approaching the crossroads in the centre of the village from the Greeba direction, take the left turning downhill – then at the bottom of the hill take the right turn to Patrick.  Arriving in Patrick at a T-Junction, take the right turn and the church is 200yds up on the right side of the road.

In a great show of teamworking, David has kindly agreed to play Alto 2 on both of the Jon Halton pieces (Horace Silver and Jungle Book) to help out as Jane M and Andrea won’t be at the concert.

Andrea has already donated a priae to the raffle.  If anyone else feels similarly disposed, please let me know and I’ll pass on the info to the guys at the church.  Ta.

All – Please be at the church at latest 6:30pm, to allow time to setup and warm up – we’ll start the rehearsal at 6:45.

Christmas Meal / AGM – Monday 10th December

As you know, we’ll be holding our annual dinner at the Creg ny Baa.  The cost of the meal is £22.50.  Drinks are extra !

Andrea is collecting deposits from all at the next couple of rehearsals – @ £20 each.  …. and as an incentive to save us having to play debt collector again, if you pay Andrea on or before our rehearsal on 5th November, you only pay £20 – the MSE will pick up the difference.  Anyone paying after 5th November will pay the full rate !

Christmas Tunes

As you know, we have a mini concert planned for Saturday afternoon 8th December, and we’ll be out in Douglas busking later in the month.

Please keep an eye out for an email coming your way this week to check who plays what on our Christmas repertoire.  Please try to get this back to me without delay, so that I can plan parts for Kyra, Matt and Charlotte in good time.  Ta.

Cheers Jem

Patrick Church Concert – November 2nd 2012

Hi all,

As you already know, we’re building up to our concert at the Holy Trinity Church in Patrick, which is to be held at 7:30 pm., Friday 2nd November.

We have arranged a rehearsal in the church on Monday 29th October – I’ll be there at 6:30pm latest, the rehearsal starts at 6:45 pm as usual.

Please see some further notes below, on the logistics for the concert.  Our playlist can be found in this previous post.

Please make every effort to bring your friends and family along – this has the makings of a really good concert, and I’d like us to fill the seats !

Remember – tickets are only £5 a go.

Logistics Arrangements

Players’ cases will go in the vestry. Its small but they should fit in.

We will provide wine and nibbles o the night, and we’ll have a break in the middle would be good for people to refill their glass.

We were planning to charge £5 per ticket to raise money for community projects the church is involved in.

We will have a small raffle at the end. Will try to get a couple of good prizes.

We will make sure the schoolrooms are open so you can park in the car park and walk through schoolrooms to church.

Port Erin Concert / Rehearsal Mon 15th October

————————————

Hi all,

Firstly, a big thank-you to all for last night’s concert.  We aimed for a 40’s big band feel, which isn’t easy for a sax band – but I think we pulled it off.  The organisers were delighted and we had folk up and dancing, which really helped the feelgood factor.

For the next few weeks leading up to our full concert at Patrick Church on Friday Nov 2nd, we’ll concentrate on our ‘second-half’ playlist (see below), plus brush up on a few selected areas of our 40’s tunes.  This won’t take all of our time, so we’ll also look at some new stuff and/or tunes that we’ve only looked at passingly – more details later.

Please put a note in your diaries that our rehearsal on Monday 29th October will be held at Trinity Church, Patrick – usual start time of 6:45pm.

I’ll circulate more details on the Patrick evening, with directions etc., nearer the time.

See you Moday – cheers Jem

40’s night charity concert – Legion Hall, Port Erin

Replies to jem.cotton@wm.im

————————————

Hi all,

As you know, we’re playing at the Legion Hall in Port Erin this Saturday.  It’s apparently called “A night at the Naafi cafe” … and has a 40’s / WWII theme.

A little late in the day, but I’ve managed to squeeze some details from them on the running order etc., so here’s the low-down …

Running Order for the Evening     Night at the Naafi

… and a competition form if you’re so inclined …   its a long way to PSM

Charlotte – feel free to bring a few supporters along.  The concert is sold out, but the organisers have allowed some room for us to come and listen etc. !

We need to be at the venue for 8:30pm – please allow time to get parked beforehand.  Parking should be available in the car-park behind the hall.

I’ll bring stands and banners, but would appreciate your help as always to get them set up … and the same at the end of the concert.

Our tuning-room space is limited, but we’ll do our best – possibly tuning in sections.  We’re on the floor at 9:15pm.

Dress Code is smart black lowers / footwear.  For gents, we wear white shirts and waist-coats (Matt, I’ll bring mine for you to use) – and ladies wear blue blouses.

If in doubt, check out the team pic. on the front page of the MSE website.

Lastly, the Playlist (in order) is below.

It’s really important that you have your music in a folder (not loose) and in order as we’ll move quickly from one tune to the next on the night.

Playlist

Little Brown Jug   — Note that on a shouted count of 1-2-3 shortly after the end of the piece, we’ll re-start at the lead-in to bar 73.

Moonlight Serenade

I’ve got a Gal in Kalamazoo

Embraceable You

Don’t sit under the Apple Tree

I’m beginning to see the light

It’s only a Paper Moon

The MSE Support team

The Support Team

As many of you know, the MSE has a very simple committee structure.  This was established in 2010 on the understanding that whilst committee activities would be minimised, many of the supporting tasks needed to run the band effectively and to help it grow, would come from the band’s membership – whether they were committee members or not.

In practice though, this just hasn’t materialised and band activities have suffered significantly as a result.  Specifically, the current situation has left me personally with an impossible workload, as I currently have to cover multiple roles that are no longer supported by the team.

Recent attempts to garner voluntary support from the band through have met with a very disappointing response.  I received virtually no offers of help – the only exception being that Kyra offered to pitch in out if no-one else steps up, despite being the busiest teenager I know!

I’ve stated on many occasions that I can’t maintain this situation ongoing, and that I am looking to all band members to take a sense of ownership in their band by providing practical support.  We’ll address this topic in depth at the AGM, and the first Monday back in the new year will be primarily dedicated to a whole-team meeting to plan our activities for the next calendar year.

However, to avoid periods of embarrassing silence at the AGM, and to ensure that the band is able to continue in its present form, I would strongly urge that you put your hand up now and offer to do your bit for your band.

The attached document contains a list of our key support roles.  Within this list, it’s particularly important that we find members who are willing to commit the time and effort necessary to drive the following roles;

– Treasurer

– Concerts and Events Organiser

– Secretary

– Publicity Officer

Note – This list is not exhaustive, so please consult the Support Roles document below to see where you can help.

Click this link for a more detailed view of MSE’s support roles …   MSE Support Roles October 2012

The holders of these key roles will meet together with the M.D. and any other members who are working on active topics at the time, before the start of each term (at a time that does not affect rehearsals) to plan the band’s upcoming activities, and again mid-term for a brief session, to conduct a progress check on current actions.

Regards Jem

Concerts and Rehearsals update

========================================================================================================

Replies to jem.cotton@wm.im

Please read this all the way through and reply to any relevant items – thanks … and sorry it’s so long !

========================================================================================================

Hi all,

General Updates

Firstly, for those who use our practice aids (Andrea :)) – I’ve put the score, parts etc. for “I’ve got a Gal” on the website…

http://www.saxband.co.uk/members/kalamazoo.html

For this week’s rehearsal, we’ll run through the playlist for the 40’s night in playlist order, so please make sure you have your sheet music organised accordingly so we don’t waste time in rehearsal looking for lost music !

AGM Date

Bowing to popular demand, and wanting to concentrate of getting our concerts right, I’ve decided to move the AGM to Monday December 10th.

Part Allocations

I’ve updated the part allocations for all current tunes, and would appreciate your checking that I’ve got them right.

http://www.saxband.co.uk/members/membersarea.html

Rehearsal Homework

I know we’re not all great at chromatic scales, and the section at ‘F’ in ‘I’ve got a Gal in Kalamazoo’ looks a bit tricky at first glance, but I’ve deliberately written it to be manageable with a bit of practice.  This will feature in the upcoming 40’s night concert on October 13th, so please set some time aside this week, and again at the weekend if you need it – to make sure you can play this section confidently.  …. and don’t forget that you can use the MIDI / MP3 versions of the tune to practice with if you need to.

Change to Rehearsal Venue – Important

We have three concerts coming up in fairly quick succession, so I’ve made some changes to our usual rehearsal patterns to suit.   We’ll still meet on Mondays as usual, but some of the rehearsals will be at our performance venues, as follows ;

– Monday evening October 29th – Rehearsal will be at Holy Trinity Church, Patrick, starting promptly at 6:45pm.

– Monday evening 26th November / 3rd December – Rehearsals will be at Marown Church, Glen Vine (near MTV) – start 5:45pm.

These are subject to confirmation from the concert holders, but please start planning for the new locations.  Anyone who’s unsure of directions, or may have difficulty getting to the venues, please see me and we’ll do what we can to help.

Missing in Action

I’m sorry to say that I’ve got a bit confused with who’s around for each of the coming concerts.  Can you please check the list below and let me know asap of any corrections needed.  Ta.

Can’t make 40’s Night – 13th Oct – Jackie, Tracey

Can’t make Patrick Concert – Nov 2nd – Andrea, Jane Mooney

Can’t make Christmas Concert – Dec 8th – Guy

I’ll assume that everyone else is available.

Upcoming Concerts

40’s Night – Sat 13th October (7:30pm **) – Port Erin Legion Hall
