MSE Rehearsal 25th March – Cancelled

Hi all,

Sorry for the late notice, but the session tonight is cancelled due to bad weather.

I would have sent a note earlier, but I’ve returned from the UK and have only just gained access to my house through some sizeable snow-drifts !  Pauline and I even had to bunk up with friends last night as we couldn’t reach home.

Can you please ring around your friends to let them know and ensure that they’ve got the message rather than waste travel time – and when you receive the message can you please either email me to let me know on ….  jem.cotton@wm.im or text me on 07867 830835

Thanks a mill, Jem

Important Note – Next week (April 1st) is a bank holiday so we won’t meet then – but please make every effort to attend the following two sessions (April 8th and 15th) as we’ll use these as rehearsals for our mini concert on the workshop weekend.

Songs of the British Isles – Part 2

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say well done for Thursday’s performance in Ramsey.  I feel we represented ourselves well, despite one or two organisational hiccoughs from me (which tune next ?) etc.  I’m currently thinking about which tunes (about 6 or so from our current repertoire) we should take forward to the Weekend Workshop for our concert on the Sunday.  If you have any particular favourites, let me know, with your reasons why …

Please check out the MSE website as I’ve just posted up Songs of the British Isles – Part 2.

Prior to Monday’s rehearsal session. – thanks.

Click the link above to access the page.  For interest, I’ve also uploaded the score (yes, all 43 pages of it) for those who are particularly interested or have excess bandwidth available !

Cheers Jem

Concert tonight – Scoill Ree Gorree – 14th March

Hi all,

A few quick points related to our concert tonight …..

Dress Code

The IOMWO team will be dressed in black lowers / white shirts.  For the MSE section, all of the gents can simply slip on their waistcoats to transform into their new personae.  Ladies should bring their blue tops – Jane M., up to  you whether you remain in your IOMWO shirt or nip off for a quick change !

Play List

The list below is in playing order -> Can you please make sure you can switch quickly between one tune and the next – ta.

Stands

It would be really helpful if someone could bring along a bag of stands to tonight’s concert, picked up on the way from Whitestrand.  If you can help out, please let me know during the day today – ta.

See you in Ramsey tonight !

Cheers Jem

Songs of the British Isles – Part 1

Hi all,

As promised, here’s the first part of the “Songs of the British Isles” series.  This is a foretaste of the Alistair Parnell weekend.

Songs of the British Isles

Click the link above to visit the web-page.

Please print these off in good time for the next rehearsal (Monday 11th March), taking into account ……

1 – I’m leaving for Berlin on Sunday, so I’d advise you to print out any material you need before Saturday evening.  That way I can resolve any problems prior to setting off for foreign parts !

2 – Please make a point of printing all of the parts for your instrument (Altos – 1, 2 & 3 – Tenors 1 & 2)  ** as David won’t carry spares, and we’ll need to flexibility in working out who plays what.   …. and this way, if someone misses the blog message, you’ll still have parts available !

For the rehearsal on Monday, David will cover a few items on our existing repertoire which just need to be checked over, and will then move on to the 4 Songs in the British Isles Part 1 pack, plus Sway – which you should also have in your packs as it’s part of this term’s repertoire.

See you soon, Regards Jem

** – Yes I know it’s 17 pages of print for Altos, but that’s better than the 140 or so I’ve just had to print out then scan, to create master copies for this piece 🙂

Peel Pensioners update

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks for a really successful, feel-good concert last night.  We got very positive feedback from everyone I spoke to – and in particular the folks seemed to like Kalamazoo, Take 5, Yes Indeed etc. – not surprising I guess as these are real memory-joggers.

Pauline commented that our Kalamazoo had a really authentic big-band feel about it.

Quote of the month however comes from a guy in the audience who said “Your sound took me back to the fifties when I’d listen to the great jazz bands in Manchester – only you’ve got a much better looking front row than they had !”

… that’s not saying that our back row don’t have an inner beauty of course 🙂

Please keep an eye out for the next post, as I’ll be sending details of some new music which you need to print out ready for the next rehearsal.

I won’t be around on Monday, so David has kindly offered to run the session.  He’ll look at a few key points in our current repertoire, and will take the team through some new tunes which will feature in our upcoming weekend with Alistair Parnell.

Regards to all, Jem

Peel Pensioners Concert 6th March – update

=================================================

Updated to reflect correct date for IOMWO concert – Thurs 14th March

=================================================

Hi all.

Firstly the good news – no changes to the running order !  This may be a first in MSE history.

Please see the attachment for performance notes for each of the tunes we’ll feature in this concert – click the link >>  Peel Pensioners – Performance Notes

Monday’s rehearsal will be our final run through before the Peel Concert (which is held at the Philip Christian Centre, so please arrive in good time

The concert starts on Wednesday 6th at 7:30pm, so we need to be there 7:00pm latest. …. and allow for Peel parking which is atrocious !

We’ll play in formal gear – Black lowers, MSE shirts for the ladies – white shirts and waistcoats for the gents.

On Monday, we’ll run the whole playlist in order – so please make sure you have your music ready to avoid everyone standing around between tunes.

… and do please put in some practice over the weekend to ensure you’re confident of your notes etc. – but overall we’re looking pretty good for the concert.

Cheers Jem

p.s. – For the joint concert with IOMWO (at Scoill Ree Gorree, Ramsey) – Thursday 14th March  starts 8pm – we’ll feature a subset of the Peel Pensioners tunes.  We’ll aim for around 15 minutes before and after the break in the concert (30 mins total), so we’ll probably only drop 2 or 3 tunes from the Peel Pensioners list.
