Peel Pensioners Concert wash-up, and Next Dates

Hi all,

Peel Pensioners

Last night’s concert at Peel Pensioners went down very well with our friends at the Philip Christian Centre, and the informal feedback I heard was all really positive.   It seems that the two tracks with a backing worked really well as a bit of variety, so we’ll look at doing a couple more next term and maybe finding a decent pianist for a trial concert.  The poem seemed to also go down ok, and I’ll put a copy on the website soon.

From my perspective, I was hugely pleased with the band’s performance, and in this regard we performed with a level of musical sensitivity that improved greatly on  recent rehearsals.  Maybe it was the sense of occasion, but as a band we appeared to notch up our concentration and presentation quite a big step.  As always there were a few minor bloopers (and I contributed one or two just to make you feel better 🙂 ), but the odd slip in a live performance is inevitable and I’m never fussed about these provided the show doesn’t come to a grinding halt !  The high points for me were our rhythmic togetherness, and in particular our variation in dynamics – the contrast between the quiet bits, swelling to at times ‘in your face’ was excellent.  I also saw a little ‘dancing’ going on in the livelier numbers which helped us stay together, and of course conveys enjoyment and involvement to the audience.

Finally, whilst I don’t normally pick out individual contributions to a concert, I think it has to be recognised that Ray has come from a standing start to learn our playlist and more in a fairly short term – so thanks Ray and well done.

Taking an Easter Break / Next Term

It seems that there was broad support for our taking a couple of weeks off, and this is entirely supported from my side !

Enjoy your Easter break, and we’ll look to return to the front line on Monday April 13th.  Don’t forget to bring your subs – £20 to Matt when you come back.

Looking forward, our timing gives us a maximum of 12 weeks before our next planned concert in Port Erin on 2nd July.  Of course we have TT in the middle, so that may interfere somewhat but we normally manage at least one of the two weeks.

This gives us some breathing space to try some new material and learning techniques, but I don’t want to overload us.  In overview, we’ll move forward with the best of our current playlist and add a limited selection of new pieces / pick up on work-in-progress tunes.  We’ll discuss the details when we meet up.

As for me, I’m off to lie down for a couple of weeks !

Cheers, Jem

Peel Pensioners Wednesday 25th March, Philip Christian Centre Peel – Arrive 7pm please

Hi all,

Please see below as the final playlist based on last night’s rehearsal (which went strangely well for a pre-concert run-though !).

Dress Code is … Gents – Black lowers, White uppers, Waistcoats optional (not all have them).  Lady – something that ties in – black, navy etc. – leave up it to you 🙂

Please this time really make an effort to turn up on time at latest 7pm, as we have to tune up and briefly run Manx National Anthem before the audience sits down.

Would also be great to do a sound-level check on Night Train and Standing Room.

Can you please make sure you have your music ready and in-order – ta.

I’ll bring banners for the stands, and we’re good to go.

Lastly, I’ll make sure the sheet music you need is on the website tonight.

Cheers, Jem

Playlist for Peel Pensioners

Hi all,

Really sorry that I’ve not been able to provide this up ’til now.  My project in France has been a nightmare, but it’s coming to an end at the end of the month !

Tonight’s rehearsal will be a catch-all.   We’ll pick up on selected pieces and make sure we’re ready for the concert.

David – can you please bring your alto for ‘Sleep’ – thanks.

All – the usual rules apply.  We finish when we’ve got the pieces right, so please make sure you have all the sheet music ready, and turn up as early as poss.

Cheers Jem

Ramsey Concert Cancelled !!!

Hi all,

Rather at the last moment (and just after I’d managed to get together by email with Colin of the Lonan Choirto agree a joint playlist), I heard through Colin that the Ramsey Church have cancelled Saturday evening’s concert due to a lack of ticket sales.

I’m not feeling very charitable right now, and so put this down to a direct lack of effort and support on behalf of the Methodist Church team.  Even when I’m feeling more charitable, I might express it more politely but my conclusion will remain the same.  It’s the easy-come easy-go attitude of organisers who have little invested in the event.

I guess there’s a learning point or two here about doing stuff for free … and making sure that the other side are as committed as we are.

So – sorry to all if you were looking forward to the concert.  The good news is that we had a spare gig or two up our sleeve, so we’ll still get out to play the tunes we’ve been rehearsing.

A quick reminder that next Monday (16th) will be MSE-Free as I’m in France, but we’ll get together the following Monday (23rd ) for a pretty full rehearsal prior to both the Peel Pensioners on Weds the 25th and Sulby the following Saturday 28th !

Take care all, practice loads and I’ll see you soon.

Regards from sunny Paris !

Jem

Special Note – Monday 16th March

Hi all,

Just a quick note to confirm that there will not be a rehearsal on Monday 16th March, partly as I will be either in or en-route to Paris, but also because we’ll be very short-handed across the band so not much chance of doing useful stuff.

The next rehearsal will be on Monday 23rd of March – Can I please ask for a full turnout ** and prompt start please as this is our last slot before the Peel Pensioners and Sulby concerts.

Thanks all, Jem

Music for Ramsey Methodist Church – a small amendment

Hi all,

The wish for no last-minute surprises didn’t last long as Susie had the lurgey tonight 🙂

As a result, we did some minor adjustments and I’d like to take out “Moondance” (which we need to rehearse with all of us playing), and instead insert “Come and Go with Me” into the playlist.

@Susie – there’s one other tune that may possibly need some amendment before the night – Three Manx Dances.

Dances 2 & 3 are fine, but Dance 1 relies on your Alto Sax 1 part carrying the tune between sections.  With you out of the mix, we couldn’t confidently practice this.

I can amend my Sop part to feature the linking sections just in case, as a backup to the A1 part.

And – Can everyone please meet up at the Methodist Church prior to 7pm, so that we can not only tune up, but give Manx Dance 1 a run-through to check that we can play it confidently.

Thanks all – See you Saturday, Jem

Playlist and logistic arrangements for Ramsey Methodist concert – Sat. 14th March

Hi all,

First things first – the concert starts at 7:30pm, so can you please all be at the venue (and ready to tune up) at 7:00pm latest please.

Dress code – Gents usual black lowers, White upper – waistcoats optional.    Susie, please wear something amazing that doesn’t clash and doesn’t upstage us old fellas too much 🙂

Playlist – I planned to dovetail our music with that of the Lonan choir, but didn’t hear back from their leader over the weekend.

Therefore, the list below is in alphabetical order.  Unless you hear otherwise, let’s go ahead with that.  We can be flexible on the night, and with only a short delay, we can find the piece we need and start promptly.     – Please don’t use this as an excuse though to take your sheet music in any old order, as fumbling around for music in a concert looks really unprepared / unprofessional.

I’m going to be working in Paris from Tuesday onwards, and will get back late Friday evening – and if there’s a slip, early Saturday morning !

With this in mind, I’d appreciate it if there were no last-minute surprises – our music is about right in terms of preparation, so turn up in good time and lets enjoy the show !

Regards to all, Jem
